Texas Toads are found in, southwestern Oklahoma, western two thirds of Texas, southwestern New Mexico and northern Mexico.

They are found in dry areas such as mesquite grasslands, scrublands and deserts. During daytimes they take refuge in rodent burrows and under debris. Populations are often found close to permanent source of water.

Breeding occurs from spring to early fall. Eggs are laid in temporary bodies of water. Tadpoles can take from a few weeks to half a year to develop into toadlets. This depends on amount of resources available to the tadpoles.

Diets include insects and other invertebrates.

This species does not have a mid-dorsal stripe and little to no cranial crests. Their skin is brown and covered with green, red and/or brown colored warts and their bellies are white.
