Order: Ciconiiformes Family: Charadriidae Chick Type: Precocial (Only need parental attendance) Black-bellied Plovers breed in tundra area of northern Alaska, northern Canada and northern Russia. In the United States, they winter along the Pacific and Atlantic coastline. Their diet consists of marine crustaceans, mollusks, worms and insects. Black-bellied Plovers lay 3-5 eggs in a scrape in the ground. The egg takes 26-27 days to hatch. The chicks fledge when they are 5 to 6 weeks old. In other parts of the world, this bird is called the Grey Plover. They remain in winter plumge from August to April, and change to breeding plumage from April to late August. This species is the largest member of its family in the United States (the Snowy Plover is the smallest). |
