Order: Passeriformes Family: Parulidae Chick Type: Altricial Black-and-white Warblers breed as far north as the southwestern area of the Northwest Territories in Canada and south to Central Texas. The breeding range also includes most of the eastern United States and west to the norrtheastern corner of Montana. They winter along the Texas Gulf Coast, most of Florida, Mexico and northern parts of South America. Deciduous woodlands make up the bulk of their habitat, they tend to be in secondary growth rather than old growth forests. Like some warbler species, black & white warblers are ground nesters.Clutches are around 5-6 eggs. Nests are cup shaped and are located at the base of scrubs, in rock piles and even under logs. Diet consists of a broad range of insects and spiders. Unlike many warbler species, Black & White warblers use a creeping method of feeding. It focuses on trunks of trees and large limbs; looking for bark dwelling insects such as moths, bark & click beetles and grubs.
