Black-chinned Hummingbirds are the western counterpart to Ruby-throated Hummingbirds. Black-chins are found throughout the western parts of the United States; from central Texas to the Pacific Ocean. This species overwinters in southern Mexico.

Diet consists mainly consists of nectar, but it also eats insects.

Nests are build from plant matter and bound together with spider webs and silk from caterpillars. The inner part is lined with plant down, such as dandelion down. One to three white eggs are laid and incubated for about two week. The chicks will leave the nest in 21 days.

Males have the black chin, while female and immature male chins are white, with some thin streaking. The female's tail have white edges, while the males have a completely dark tail.
