Order: Anseriformes Family: Anatidae Chick Type: Precocial (Parental attendance) Blue-winged Teals maybe be found throughout the United States at different times of the year. They breed in northeastern, western and central states, along with most of Canada and southeast part of Alaska. During winter, they can be found in parts of California, southwest Arizona, South Texas and southeastern states. This species was in danger of extinction in the early 1900's because of unregulated hunting and habitat loss. Luckily, this species has made a comeback due to federal protection, preservation of habitat and putting up nest boxes. Their diet consists of aquatic vegetation, seeds and aquatic invertebrates. Blue-wings nest on the ground, the nest is made of vegetation and is lined with down feathers. The clutch size is around 6 - 14 creamy white colored eggs. Incubation time is around 23-27 days. |
