Canvasbacks breed in the northwestern part of the U.S, eastern Alaska and western Canada. They winter along the Pacific coast line, southcentral , southeast United States and long the Atlantic coastline from Connecticut to Mexico.

Their diet consists of aquatic vegetation (pondweeds, seeds, wild celery) and aquatic invertebrates (clams, crabs). Aquatic inverts are its main food during winter.

Female Canvas lay 7 - 12 greenish eggs and the incubation time is around 24 - 29 days.

The largest diving duck in their genus. Canvasbacks will lay their eggs in the nests of other Canvasbacks.
