Texas Earless Lizards actually do have ears, instead of external ears they have internal ears. Some scientists feel that its an adaptation for living in sandy areas, others believe its shows a change from an auditory system that detects airborne vibrations to one that detects vibrations (such as in snakes) in the ground. Earless Lizards show strong sexual dimorphism, males have two black likes on their sides, with a blue area around them. Texas Earless Lizards are found throughout North-Central to South-Central texas. To the west, they are bordered by the Southwestern Earless Lizard (a subspecies of this species). Earless lizards are day time (diurnal) lizards that actively hunt for invertebrate prey. Commonly found in dry creek beds and rocky areas. Earless Lizards are clutch egg layers, they will lay several clutches of eggs in a single breeding season.
