Collared Lizards are one of the most charismatic of all Texas lizards. The Eastern Collared Lizard, Western Collared Lizard and Chihuahuan Collared Lizards are the three subspecies that makes up Crotaphytus collaris species. This subspecies runs and hops all over the Texas Panhandle and Central Texas. Their habitat consists of forests to arid canyons, particularly in areas with lots of crevices and rocks to hide under. Juvenile Collared Lizards have a different pattern than from the adults, males are brighter than females. They have saltatorial hind legs that are used for bipedalism and hopping around/on top of rocks. When running on their hind legs, they look like a small dinosaur. Collared Lizards will eat anything from insects to small mice.
