| Fish are the most numerous vertebrate species in the world! There are around 29,000 species. They can be found in any body of water, even ephemeral rain pools. The United States has around 1,200 species of freshwater fish, the smallest being the mosquito fish (Family: Poeciliidae) and the largest being the Paddlefish (Family: Polyodontidae). The country's surrounding oceans have around 1,300 species of marine fish. They range from the unique looking toadfishes (Family: Batrachoididae) to Red Drums (Family: Sciaenidae). | ![]() |
