Green-winged Teal basically are found throughout Canada and the United States. They breed in the northwest and in the boreal forest of Canada and Alaska. During winter, they can be found in freshwater and blackish marshes, ponds, and estuaries in the lower two thirds of the U.S. and also in Mexico.

Their diet consists of aquatic vegetation (muskgrass, pondweeds, widgeongrass), seeds (millets, grain) and aquatic invertebrates.

Green-wings lay 6 - 9 eggs and the incubation time is around 20 - 23 days. Green-winged teal chicks have the fastest growth rate of all ducks.

This species is the smallest of all North American dabbling ducks. They are also one of the fastest flyers. They get their name from the green speculum on their wing.
