Northern Earless Lizards are fast diurnal (daytime) lizards that inhabit West Texas, Mid-central states and parts in Eastern New Mexico. They're habitat consists of sandy areas with little vegetation, also found in dry creek beds where they take refuge under rocks for shade and to hide from predators. As daytime lizards, Northern earless Lizards can die when they reach their maximum temperature limit in the hot sun, they must regulate their body temperatures by finding shade and opening their mouth allow evaporate cooling to stay at an optimum temperature range. During different times of the day, they can position their bodies at different angles from the sun to control the amount of solar energy that they absorb. Like many small lizards, their diet consists of invertebrates.
