Prairie King Snakes are found throughout Midwestern United States. They typically inhabit grasslands, open woodlands and farm lands. Luckily, Prairie King Snakes are an adaptable species, since most of their prairie habitat has been turned into houses and farm land. Unlike Attwater Prairie Chickens, Prairie Kings adapts fairly well in a fragmented landscape. Their diet includes reptiles, mammals, and birds, including their eggs. They are not known to be an serious threat to adult Prairie Chickens. Zookeepers have found this species in the pens at the Attwater Prairie Chicken breeding facility at NASA; most likely attracted there by the rodents that feed off the extra Space chicken food.
