Speckled King Snakes are found throughout the Eastern half of Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, Alabama, Western Mississippi, Western Tennessee and Southern Illinois. This species grows around three to four feet in length. King Snakes eat a variety of things, such as small mammals, other reptiles, eggs, birds and amphibians. Hatching Speckled King Snakes are just under a foot in length, in some localities they have reddish bellies that become yellowish as they age.

This subspecies of the common king snake is named in honor of John Edwards Holbrook, who was an American zoologist.
