Lesser Nighthawks are found along the southern border of the American Southwest from southcentral Texas to California, southern Nevada, area around the Sacramento and Joaquin Valleys in California, Baja California, Central American and South America. Once in a while, this species will venture out to the southeastern United States.

Nighthawks are crepuscular, they hunt flying insects mainly during dawn and dusk. They are often seen flying near parking lot lights hunting the insects that are attracted by the light. This species will even drink while on the wing by dipping their bills on the surface of a body of water while flying over.

Female nighthawks have golden brown colored throats, while males have white throats. Nests are a simple scrape on the ground or the roof of a building. Two spotted gray eggs are laid, and the incubation time is 18-19 days. Chicks will fledge in three weeks time.
