Bird Blind

I was really impressed with their bird blind. We saw around 17 species at the blind. The most numerous bird being the Black-chinned Hummingbird.

Black-chinned Hummingbird

This is a male, both sexes were seen either at the flowers feeding or at the pool drinking water.

House Finch

Female House finch. Thanks Elaine for the ID. Several of these were seen bathing at the pool.

Lark Sparrow

These guys just stayed on the fence posts and stared at us.

Painted Bunting

The female Painted Bunting came down first, then followed by the male.

Painted Bunting

Such a interesting colored/patterned bird.

Red-eyed Vireo

This bird is actually a lifer for me, officially. Been in many places were it was spotted, at times even next to the person who spotted it, just was too much looking for herps.

Black-chinned Hummingbird

Several hummingbirds visted the feeders at South Llano River State park's headquarters.

Purple Martin

At a Purple Martin house that is planted by the park headquarters.

Western Diamond-backed Rattlesnake

Crotalus atrox

Love the red phase of the Western Diamondbacked Rattlesnake. So pretty.

Swainson's Hawk

Probably a juv. Swainson's Hawk. Not 100% Sure, anybody have any insight?

h: 150, w: 200

Gambel's Quail

One of the top five birds that I wanted to see this trip. The others were Red-faced Warblers, Plainopepla, Montezuma Quail and Golden Eagle. Saw 3 of 5 of them. Not too bad. Missed out on Red-faced Warblers and Montezuma Quail.

Western Kingbird

Saw lots of them during the trip.

Western Coachwhip

Masticophis flagellum testaceus

What would I do to find a live specimen? This snake is still on my wish list, never caught one before.

h: 150, w: 200

Western Coachwhip

Masticophis flagellum testaceus

Most common snake seen on the roads during hot days. We saw a total of 3 of them on the road. Two roadkills and one alive on road (AOR).

The Dogs

The dogs are enjoying the camp site. I was really suprised that Louie (middle) didn't eat Pancho (left).

Oliver Lee State Park

Sunset at Oliver Lee State Park in New Mexico. At sunset, we went night driving on the road leading to the park.

Kangaroo Rat

This thing is giving me problems. Only if I wasn't such a lazy butt and picked it up to count the number of toes it has. Ord's Kangaroo Rat has 5 toes while the Merriam's kangaroo Rat has 4 toes. Orb's have the pale spot under ears and eyes, as in the picture. But Merriam's have the more white than black on the tail, which is also in the picture. Lesson from this: count the roadkill's toes.

Mice

Not really sure what species this is. Was going to use the white patch on top of head as a ID mark, but so such luck so far.

h: 150, w: 200

Couch's Spadefoot

One of two Couch's spadefoots we saw. I was hoping to see Plains and New Mexico Spadefoots, but no such luck.

h: 150, w: 200

Couch's Spadefoot

This is probably a male Couch's, because of the intense net patter.

h: 150, w: 200

Cactus Wren

On the Yucca at Olive Lee State Park.

h: 150, w: 200

Green-flowered Hedgehog

I found this new interest in plants, it all started last October.

Fishhook Barrel Cactus.
