The Yellowbelly Water Snake has a really interesting latin species and subspecies name, its in the genus Nerodia, with other North American Water Snakes, its species and subspecies names are erythrogaster flavigaster. Sounds funny when you say it. Erythrogaster means redbelly, while flavigaster means yellowbelly. This has to do with the reference species for this species is the Redbelly Water Snake, while this subspecies is the Yellowbelly Water Snake, hence the flavigaster latin subspecies name. They are found in East Texas. Like other water snakes, they mainly eat fish and amphibians.
