Porphyrula martinica

Order: Gruiformes

Family: Rallidae

Chick Type : Subprecocial (Parental attendance and some parental nourishment)

Purple Gallinules are found along the southeast states that borders the Atlantic Ocean during the summer. They winter in northern Mexico and in central and south Florida. Gallinules live in salt and freshwater habitats, ranging from marshes to lakes.

Most of their diet consists of plant matter, such as seeds, fruits & leaves of aquatic plants. They will also eat invertebrates and small vertebrates.

Nests are build on aquatic vegetation and clutch size is usually around 5 - 15 eggs. Incubation time is 22 - 25 days.

Like the Common Moorhen, Gallinules have really long toes, which helps them walk on aquatic vegation. They are easily distingusted from Common Moorhens and American Coots by their bright yellow legs, if their plumge color doesn't tell them apart (during bad lighting, their plumage looks dark).
