Order: Ciconiiformes Family: Sternidae Chick Type: Semi-Precocial (parental attendance required, acquires food from parents, not very mobile, has down, eyes open) Royal Terns are found along the eastern, southwestern coastline of the United States. They also range into the coastline of Mexico and west Africa. This species consists of two subspecies. Their diet consists of fish and aquatic invertebrates. Royal Terns usually lay one to two white to brown colored eggs that are spotted on bigger end of the egg. The eggs take 30 - 31 days to catch, and the chicks will fledge in 28 - 35 days. Like other terns, this species hunt by searching for prey over the water and then plunge dive into the water after their prey. |
