Order: Ciconiiformes Family: Sternidae Chick Type: Semi-Precocial (parental attendance required, acquires food from parents, not very mobile, has down, eyes open) Sandwich Terns are found along the southeastern coast line of the United States, along with the coastline of Central and South America. This species is also found in the western coastline of Africa and parts of Europe and Asia. This species consists of three subspecies. Their diet consists of fish and aquatic invertebrates. Sandwich Terns usually lay one to two eggs that are a shade of green with black marking eggs. The eggs take 24 to 25 days to catch, and the chicks will fledge in alittle over a month time. Sandwich Terns do not get their names from a sandwich eating habit, but instead from the Sandwich, Kent, a down in England in which the type specimen was collected. Sandwhich Terns used to be in the genus Sterna, but now is placed in the genus Thalasseus. |
