Genus: Sceloporus

Type of Scales: Keeled

This subspecies of the Merriam's Canyon Lizard is exclusively found in the Big Bend region of West Texas. Canyon Lizards are diurnal, fairly fast moving and active. They can be found on in areas in their range that contain canyons. Canyon Lizards will take refuge in cracks or behind/under rocks when danger approaches but will quickly peek out to see if the danger has passed. This species hunts small insects. Like most lizards in Texas, Big Bend Canyon Lizards lay eggs rather than give birth to their young.
