Blue Spiny Lizards are the largest of all native Spiny Lizards (Genus Sceloporus). They inhabit the dry brushy habitat of the South Texas Plains. They are also commonly found around bridges. Roger Conant has caught many Blue Spiny Lizards hiding under supports of bridges in Mexico (Conant 1997). Sometimes you can find large numbers of Blue Spiny Lizards hiding under boards in abandoned farm buildings during cold spells. One of the most interesting fact about this species is that their ability to give birth to their young (viviparity). This species was described by Edward Drinker Cope in 1885.
