Desert Box Turtles are found in West Texas, Southeast quarter of New Mexico and Southeast corner of Arizonia. They live mainly in desert grasslands, but can also be found in shrub lands. Human disturbance has caused many of the native grasslands to change to shrub lands. Adult Desert Box Turtles (Terrapene ornata luteola) are not as brightly patterened as Ornate Box Turtles (Terrapene ornata ornata), they are subspecies of each other. Like most turtles, box turtles are more carnivorous as juveniles and become more herbivorous as adults. They eat insects, berries, worms, eggs, slugs and fungi.
